People ask me all the time what kind of calls we get. Most think it is all complaints and apologising. And sure there is some of that. Everyone has a bad day. But honestly a lot of the calls are just people talking. People who are happy and want to tell someone. Since I am the one who usually picks up the phone I hear a lot of it. Some of it stays in my head longer than the rest.

There was this one man from Lucknow. I remember the sound of his voice. He called around evening. Said he has been with DishTV since forever and he felt he was paying too much. I asked him to just tell me what he watches in a day. It was a short list. A few Hindi channels and one news channel. That was it. His pack though had like a hundred something channels. So I opened his account on my screen and I could see he was on some really old pack that we do not even sell anymore. We changed it to a current one. Kept only his channels. His bill went down. He called me a week later. Not complaining. Just said it works and he is happy. People do not usually call back to say that, so it stuck.

A lady from Pune once called in a bit upset. She had bought a new TV. Big one. And she said the picture on it looked bad. She thought she wasted her money on the TV. I asked what pack she had and she said she did not know. Just that it was old. We looked and it was an SD pack. That was the whole problem. The TV was fine. We got her onto HD. The next morning she called almost laughing saying the picture was so clear she could not believe it. She kept saying she felt silly for not asking before. She was happy though.

One call from a small town in Bihar I still remember clearly. He had cable before us and he said whenever it rained the signal would just go. His kids used to cry about it. He wanted to switch but he was worried satellite would have the same problem where he lived. I told him it should be okay. He went for it. After maybe a week he called me and I could hear how relieved he sounded. Said it worked fine even in the rain. First time in a while movies stayed on for his kids. That one made me feel good for the rest of the day.

And there was a mother from Delhi who called because her two kids were fighting. Both over the same remote. One wanted cartoons and the other wanted movies. She sounded tired. We checked her pack and it actually had both. One was just not active in her pack settings. We turned it on. She said the noise stopped. I hear that and I think, this is why the job is not so bad.

An old man from Jaipur only wanted news and old films. He told me straight he does not watch anything else and he does not want to pay for stuff he will never open. So we made him a pack with just those channels. Bare minimum. He was pleased and said nobody had ever done that for him. He said everywhere he called kept pushing the biggest plans. I thought he had a point.

I keep a lot of these in my head. If you call us maybe your call will be one of the ones I remember too.
